Spanning the divide between Steve Reich and avant-garde guitar music, Collings has already found considerable praise from the international community for his previous releases under the moniker Sketches for Albinos. His compositions include a wide range of instrumentation, from guitars, piano, organ and vocals to white noise, percussion, found sound and field recordings, theremin, brass and strings. Matthew’s new record Splintered Instruments, produced by Ben Frost, is to be released on the Fluid Audio label. ´…he works his magic; tuning and manipulating the sound and folding it back on itself to fill the air around him with glacially magnificent sonic sculpture. There are two or three such pieces in his set; each building like some submerged orchestra. Amazing stuff.’ Manchester Music http://www.sleepsoundagency.com/matthew-collings.html http://vimeo.com/33030809 Focal Gaol Focal Gaol started life as an offshoot of ambient electronics group, Aurelie, providing a forum for live improvisation and developing work by individual members. The rotating line up includes: Jim Tetlow (percussion), Dave Dhonau (cello/bass), Glenn Boulter (guitar, electronics), Ola Szmidt (flute) and John Hall (laptop / gramophone). http://focalgaol.bandcamp.com/ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nayFkMp3H9w Ryoko Akama Ryoko Akama is a UK-based composer, performer and a sound artist perhaps best known as a member of improvisation collective The Lappetites, alongside Eliane Radigue, Kaffe Matthews and AGF. Simon Scott is a sound artist and multi-instrumentalist currently based in Cambridge. His third album, Below Sea Level, was released in May 2012 by Taylor Deupree’s acclaimed 12k label. The aesthetics of active listening and the subjective distinction of compositional materials and sound timbres are predominant explorations in his work. His music is a fusion of digital signal manipulation, micro-melodies and minimalism combined with environmental sounds and organic acoustic textures. He is inspired by his interests in sound ecology, music technology, digital media, illustration, composition and sonic art. His music has been previously released on Morr Music, Miasmah, Slaapwel, Sonic Pieces, Secret Furry Hole and Ghostly International, and his track For Martha was included on Kompakt’s Pop Ambient 2012 compilation. http://www.simonscott.org/ P Jørgensen is a composer & sound artist based in Copenhagen, Denmark. Exploring the relationship between composition and chance, Jørgensen creates music by drawing upon a palette of acoustic instrumentation and field recordings which are transformed into luminous textures, crystalline tones and vibrant ambient drones. http://clangtint.net/ riverrun is a side project by Daniel Land of the UK bands ENGINEERS and DANIEL LAND & THE MODERN PAINTERS.Taking its name from the famous opening line of James Joyce’s modernist masterpiece Finnegan’s Wake, the riverrun project (always in lowercase letters) is a series of ‘secret’ ambient recordings that Land has been working for over a decade in parallel to his songs. The end result of this compositional process is an aural canvas of almost unimaginable complexity, whose...

KEN VANDERMARK TRIO

Featuring OLIE BRICE & MARK SANDERS Monday 24 September, plus special guests Prince/Adolpho/Constanzo/Hunter & Birchall/Cheetham Duo We are delighted to be welcoming legendary Chicagoan musician Ken Vandermark back to Manchester on Monday 24 September, in a trio setting with bassist Olie Brice and drummer Mark Sanders. Ken Vandermark has focused on expanding the possibilities of improvised and composed music. He’s worked continuously from the middle 1990’s onward — both as a performer and organizer in North America and Europe — and his creative emphasis has been contemporary music that deals directly with advanced methods of improvisation. Vandermark moved to Chicago from Boston in 1989. Since then he’s performed and recorded in a vast array of contexts, and with many internationally renowned musicians, touring on a regular basis in North America, Europe, Brazil and Japan for more than half of each year. His concerts and numerous recordings have been critically acclaimed both at home and abroad. Past groups of significance include the Vandermark 5, Powerhouse Sound, the Frame Quartet, DKV Trio, the Territory Band, NRG Ensemble, AALY, the Vandermark Quartet, Spaceways Inc., FME, and School Days. Currently, the majority of his work as a composer and improviser has been developed in Made To Break, Side A, Platform 1, Free Fall, and the Resonance Ensemble. In addition, he works on a regular basis with the total improvisation units Sonore, the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, separate duos with the percussionists Paal Nilssen-Love and Tim Daisy, Lean Left, iTi, and Fire Room. Each year brings additional new projects and collaborations, which expand the range of his work. Vandermark also performs in a solo context. Tickets £8 advance, available from See Tickets and...
